“What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”
There’s a scarlet thread running through Scripture—from Genesis to Revelation—and its name is Jesus. In The Greatest Story Ever Told: Part 3, Pastor Gene Herndon unpacks one of the most powerful examples of that thread: Rahab, a prostitute in Jericho who ended up in the lineage of Christ.
Yes, you read that right.
Rahab Didn’t Look the Part
Rahab wasn’t the typical Bible heroine. She wasn’t a prophetess or priest. She lived on the edge of the city and on the edge of respectability. Her label? “Harlot.” Yet her faith, not her past, positioned her for purpose.
She wasn’t in covenant, didn’t grow up in church, and likely never owned a Bible scroll. But when God’s people came to spy the land, she recognized something the Israelites themselves missed: God was real, and His people were coming with victory.
“She had more courage with no covenant than the ten spies who had the promises of God.” —Pastor Gene
The Power of the Scarlet Thread
In exchange for her faith, Rahab was given a sign—a scarlet thread to tie in her window. It was more than a cord. It was a prophetic symbol. A crimson promise. A shadow of the blood of Jesus, which would one day hang from a cross like the lamb’s blood on the doorposts in Egypt.
Just like the Israelites in Exodus had to apply the blood to be protected, Rahab had to display her faith before the walls fell. And she did.
Before the rescue.
Before the battle.
Before she knew the outcome.
That’s what real faith looks like.
Grace for the Disqualified
So why Rahab? Why would God choose someone with such a past?
Because that’s exactly what the scarlet thread is for.
“God didn’t ask you to clean it before He covered it. You are clean because He covered it.”
Rahab’s story dismantles religious elitism. It confronts the lie that says your past disqualifies your future. If you’ve ever felt like you’ve gone too far, messed up too much, or don’t belong in the story—Rahab proves you do.
You Have to Stay Inside
When destruction came to Jericho, Rahab and her family were saved because they stayed inside the house marked by the thread. In the same way, we’re called to stay under the covering of Christ’s blood—not just know about it, but apply it, live in it, walk in it.
Don’t let shame push you back into the streets of insecurity, fear, or sin. The scarlet thread says you’ve been chosen, covered, and kept.
Final Thoughts: When the Church Panics, the Prostitute Prophesies
Sometimes, it’s not the seasoned saints but the “outsiders” who demonstrate the boldest faith. Rahab wasn’t perfect, but she was positioned. And her courage didn’t just save her—it wove her into the greatest story ever told.
From brothel to bloodline. From harlot to heroine. From OnlyFans to God’s plan.
That’s the power of the scarlet thread.
